XX Vinaròs International Short Film Festival ‘Agustí Comes’: Jury Prize justification

Its studied images, captured in powerful black and white, as reminiscences of the most classic cinema confer the film an aesthetic quality that conveys a sense of distance and a certain unreality, even like a nightmare. The present is showed in color and the past in black and white, but both are connected, basically, by the same problems. A chapter of the civil war treated in a novel and in an attractive way by a director highly appreciated in this festival. “Breakfast with a diadem” nine years ago and “Bikini: a true story” in 2015 were both selected as finalists before. Significantly, 3 of its 4 fiction short films have been finalists throughout the history of this festival, especially considering the immense volume of short films received. We are delighted to know that, on this third occasion, he wins the jury award.

The jury has considered that it is the short film that best reflects what cinema is and a story well told in the right narrative time. The cinema is, in essence, an image and in this work it is treated very carefully, being each shot a precise composition.

There are great interpretive level performances and in general, everything works with excellent precision. On the other hand, it´s the film that best admits several viewings, an aspect that has favored its choice.

In the jury’s opinion, a well-deserved award for a national production which has a theme as universal and timeless as wars and their consequences that lead to immigration.

As a curiosity, commenting that it strongly evokes the Paco Plaza´s comic, “Los surcos del azar”, from which the director confirmed that he had taken references.
